Shoulder

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and is a ball-and-socket joint, which allows for a large range of movement, albeit at the expense of the stability of the joint. There are many causes of shoulder pain, from biomechanical and tendon issues, to postural problems.  However, shoulder pain isn’t always caused by a problem in the shoulder joint itself; neck problems can also refer pain that is felt in the shoulder.

If you have pain, or a niggle that won’t go away, don’t ignore it.

Here at The Physio & Therapy Rooms in Barrowford, we offer treatment for all types of shoulder problems, with our aim always being to improve your quality of life by easing your pain, increasing your mobility and getting you back to doing the things you enjoy.

“I am writing to commend you on your excellent service. I attended your practice initially after months of shoulder pain and found you to be very well informed. You knew immediately what was required. In no time my shoulder was better.

After a more recent tennis injury, I once again attended, my GP diagnosing tennis elbow. However, you immediately spotted that a muscle had been torn and treated the injury successfully.

I would recommend you to everyone and often sing your praises to my friends and family.

Many thanks for keeping me moving, active and pain free.”

Shoulder pain can be debilitating. A gradual onset of symptoms is often caused by problems with the rotator cuff (the muscles that provide stability for the shoulder), whereas acute shoulder pain is usually due to a trauma, which can range from a fall or sporting injury, to a direct blow (contusion) to the shoulder joint.

Our team of experienced physiotherapists treat a wide range of conditions but some of the more common shoulder problems that we routinely offer relief from are:

  • Shoulder Impingement – Also known as ‘swimmer’s or ‘thrower’s shoulder’, this is a common cause of shoulder pain, where one of the rotator cuff tendons inside the shoulder rubs or catches on nearby tissue or bone as the arm is lifted. It is often triggered by poor posture or by a traumatic event, such as a fall, and can cause weakness and severe pain in the shoulder, particularly when reaching outwards or backwards, such as when putting on a coat, or when the arm is lifted above ninety degrees.
  • Levator Scapulae Syndrome – Refers to the stretching of the levator scapulae muscle, which can cause it to become inflamed and painful. It is usually caused by poor posture, especially when sitting for prolonged periods, such as sitting at a desk in a slouched position whilst at work.
  • Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder) – This commonly occurs if you haven’t been able to move your arm properly following surgery or an injury. The tissue around the shoulder joint can become inflamed, gets tighter, and sticks to itself, which can cause severe pain, especially when reaching outwards, backwards, or upwards.
  • AC Joint Injury – An acromioclavicular or AC joint injury refers to an injury to the joint between the end of the collar bone (clavicle) and the upper part of the shoulder blade. It is often apparent as the outer edge of the shoulder appears to move above its usual position. It can happen as the result of a fall or sporting injury and can be very painful.
  • Scapula (Shoulder Blade) Injury – Again, often related to poor posture, this involves one or both shoulder blades sticking out from the back, or ‘winging’, rather than lying flat on the ribs. However, this can also happen as a result of injury or nerve damage and can affect a person’s ability to lift, pull, and push.
